City Council & Corporate Landowners Sound Off on the Future of Deep Ellum (Pt. I - Intro)

Last week there was an article written by Jonanna Widner of the Dallas Observer where she draws comparisons between SoHo in New York and Deep Ellum. Both came from humble beginnings: desolate neighborhoods, with empty warehouses and vacant storefronts. Both of the neighborhoods became an epicenter of art and music through the sheer will and determination of the artists and venues that stepped-up to support them. SoHo suffered the fate of gentrification--a visceral gutting of the artistic community, whose work and devotion brought it into the spotlight. Deep Ellum Venues Die at City Plan Commission 11/01/2007

As I mentioned in a bulletin previously, six establishments in Deep Ellum appeared before the Dallas City Plan Commission today. The Commission was to decide if the applicants would be fowarded to Dallas City Council to have their SUP (Specific Use Permit) reviewed. Denial of an SUP by the City Plan Commission is certain death to a venue's ability to function as a bar or dance hall; approval is only bittersweet--for the final verdict, they are subjected to the whim of Dallas City Council. Recommendation by the Plan Commission in no way guarantees success before the Council.... [More]
